During the early part of 2009, Anne Hastie lived in China as a Red Gate Gallery artist-in-residence. This show is the second in a series which explore her response to the vast, complex urban environment of Beijing.
Situated on the edge of a desert, Beijing remains grey, dusty and devoid of colour for nearly five months during winter. As a reaction to the bleached and arid physical environment, Hastie has adopted a palette of strong colour. She uses Chinese ink suspended in acrylic varnish to create intricate layers and sensations of depth.
